We defend nature

We work for bats

The Morcegos.PT Association is committed to environmental advocacy, recognizing the interdependence between the health of ecosystems and the preservation of bats. We promote sustainable practices and support conservation policies that protect natural habitats, ensuring a vital ecological balance. Through awareness campaigns, environmental restoration projects, and strategic partnerships, we work to ensure a sustainable future where bats and other species can thrive in harmony with the environment.

At Morcegos.PT, we are passionate and highly specialized conservationists and scientists leading the effort to ensure the global survival of these extraordinary mammals.

Bats lead us to the best opportunities to protect nature worldwide. Bats are vital for ecosystems and the economy of our world, but nearly 200 species are threatened with extinction.

Protecting bats is protecting ecosystems

At the Morcegos.pt Association, we defend nature through the active protection of bats, an essential yet still largely misunderstood group of our fauna. They are the only mammals with true flight capability and play an irreplaceable ecological role: controlling agricultural pests, dispersing seeds, and contributing to the balance of ecosystems.

Destruction and disturbance of their natural & artificial shelters

Habitat loss and food
scarcity due to intensified agriculture

Excessive pesticide use

Barriers and collisions with infrastructure such as wind turbines or roads

Misinformation and persecution driven by myths and superstitions

Acting for the conservation of bats and their natural habitats.

Disseminating knowledge, combating the fear and ignorance that still surround them.

Mobilizing civil society, involving schools, municipalities, businesses, and citizens.

Promoting public policies that integrate biodiversity as an essential value for sustainable development.

What we do in practice:

  • We monitor populations and protect colonies.

  • We work with property owners and managers to safeguard shelters.

  • We develop educational materials and organize awareness campaigns.

  • We participate in scientific studies and conservation projects.

  • We advocate for the enforcement of legislation protecting chiropterans in Portugal and Europe.
